In recent years, the translation of informative texts, especially scientific and technical papers, has become particularly important in the wake of the flourishing exchange of information. The source text of this translation practice report is selected from three English scientific and technical papers on electrical insulation. As a typical informative text, the source text involves the latest foreign academic research results in resin rich stator coil of high voltage motor, high voltage rotating motor and hydro generator, etc. The text is characterized by formal and logic-oriented,containing a multitude of specialized words and related terms.Accordingly, there are specific difficulties when translating. This report adopts a case analysis approach to elaborate on the problems encountered by the translator when translating these three academic papers and their corresponding solutions. The new integrative translation quality assessment model proposed by Julian House provides some guidance for translators to achieve textual equivalence and evaluate the translation quality of final translation works, and is employed throughout case analysis.Julian House’s TQA model is well-recognized by scholars at home and abroad. Its theoretical framework has been revised several times and the final version boasts specific and well-developed parameters that are highly systematic and operable. This report applies the theoretical framework from the three dimensions of “Field”,“Tenor”,and “Mode” to carry out meticulous research with certain translation cases, and then evaluates the translation quality objectively and efficiently, analyzing the reliability and validity of translation works from both macro and micro levels. After summarizing the case analysis, the translator found that the differences between the target text and the source text in the “Field” dimension are mainly at the lexical level.Differences in the“Tenor” dimension focus on the lexical and syntactical levels.Differences in the “Mode”dimension concentrate on the syntactical and textual levels. These differences originate from different expression patterns between the source language and the target language. In addition, compared with other types of texts, the EST(English for science and technology)texts are less affected by cultural factors, which makes it possible for translators to directly assess the quality of their translation works by whether they reproduce the conceptual and communicative functions of the source text or not without considering cultural differences between China and foreign countries. It is expected that this report can further investigate the applicability of the TQA model to informative texts, explore potential shortcomings in its application, and summarize the translation strategies of E-C translation of scientific and technical texts. And it may provide valuable references for future studies of the translation quality assessment model in China.
