With the intensifying competition in science and technology,the technology in the field of electrical machinery,occupying an important position in the production,daily life and science and technology development in China,has broad prospects for professional development in the current international community.A large number of foreign scientific and technological literature is required for its technological innovation,therefore,it is necessary to ask help from professional translators in introducing the relevant materials,not just relying on the practitioners.The translated materials in the English-Chinese translation report are two academic papers related to the insulation aging in rotating machinery in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE)international conference journal,which are helpful for domestic researchers to understand the methods of fault diagnosis and treatment of electrical machine as well as how to prolong its service life,so as to promote the technological innovation in this field.Taking into full consideration in the differences between English and Chinese,this translation report discusses the translation on the lexical and syntactic levels in the related papers in this field on the basis of category shifts in Catford’s translation shifts theory,which combines with the significant characteristics of scientific and technological text — objectiveness and conciseness in multiple use of inanimate subjects,nominalization and passive voices.This report carries on 42 specific translation cases to elaborate on the process of achieving text equivalence as well as accurately conveying the original information by using translation skills such as preposition,conversion,amplification and division from the following four aspects:structure shifts,class shifts,unit shifts and intra-system shifts.Through the summary and analysis,it is found that Catford’s translation shifts theory has guiding significance for the scientific and technological text in the field of electric machinery to get rid of the shackles of English form and convey the original information effectively.The translator handles the differences in the structure and logical order between Chinese and English sentences with structure shifts;solves the dynamic and static differences between Chinese and English word habits with class shifts;interprets long and difficult sentences by unit shifts combined with the other shifts;and defines the translation of terms and few expressions through intra-system shifts.At the same time,this report points out that different types of shifts may occur at different frequencies,and multiple shifts may occur simultaneously in the same sentence.To some extent,the choice of shift type is closely related to the stylistic style of the source text and the translator’s personal writing habits.
