| Translation losses are inescapable in translating because one language or culture is different from others,causing some puzzlement to readers.Translation compensation,being a major tool to address translation loss,could deliver some hidden messages of source text to target readers to the maximum extent,so as to help target readers get an equal response with source readers.This translated text is taken from the academic book,which is Imagined Audiences:How Journalists Perceive and Pursue the Public by American journalist Jacob L.Nelson.The source text writer elaborated on the relationship between journalists and their audiences specifically,and the book covers a large number of terms with specific meanings,such as proper nouns.There will be inevitably translation losses in translating because target language is different from source language in linguistic structures or cultures.In order to faithfully reproduce the original text to the greatest extent possible,translators need to compensate in translating.In order to adopt appropriate compensation strategies,possible losses during translating are analyzed based on Xia Tingde’s translation compensation research.This practice report pays close attention to losses at linguistic level,particularly in lexicon,grammar and discourse.Translation methods such as footnote,amplification and specification are used at the lexical level to make up for the losses of lexical meaning.In addition,to improve the grammar and align with the target language’s expression habits,division and conversion can be adopted when translating from an academic text with long and passive sentences.Furthermore,at discourse level,academic books are featured by logic,so amplification of logical conjunction should be adopted between sentences to reflect the inherent logical relations implied by the source text.Replacement with pronouns is used to specify the problem of pronoun reference in English.This practice report with cases particularly analyzes translation strategies of academic books in journalism.This practice is based on faithfully conveying original messages,and reasonable compensation strategies are appropriately used to decrease losses and make the translated version more in line with Chinese expression.The translator wishes that this translation practice report can offer references for related fields in journalism,and offer some methods for translating this type of text. |
