Translating Third-Person Pronouns From The Perspective Of Cohesion

This report takes Giuliano Da Sangallo and the Ruins ofRome by Cammy Brothers,a renowned scholar at Northeastern University in the United States,as the source text.It is a book about a Florentine architect named Giuliano da Sangallo.The book presents ancient Rome to the world through its depiction of ancient architectural remains.The language of the original text is literary and formal.In addition,the book involves not only terms related to architectural painting,but also long and difficult sentences that may seem obscure.Among them,the translation of third-person pronouns demands articulation and consistency.The study of it contributes to overcome the difficulties in translating attributive clauses and long and difficult sentences in some aspects.Thus,the research topic of the report is translating third-person pronouns,so that more translation examples can be studied.This report provides an analysis of translations and summarizes the main methods of translating third-person pronouns,i.e.omission,reference,and repetition,based on the concept of cohesive ties proposed by M.A.K.Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan.For each translation method,this report selects about ten sample sentences and analyses them based on the original translation and the revised one,in which it tries to illustrate and examine the rationality of the adopted translation methods.Different language conventions make grasping the difference in using third-person pronouns between English and Chinese the core of translation.The goal of translating third-person pronouns from English into Chinese is to produce fluent and natural translation based on faithfulness.By locating third-person pronouns in the source text,translating them into Chinese,and analyzing their translations,this report summarizes three translation methods for translating third-person pronouns from Chinese to English,illustrating that when translating English third-person pronouns,the translation method chosen can be determined according to the specific contexts and translation of the relevant pronouns.Also,the translation can be flexible,and translation methods change according to the needs of the Chinese context.By analyzing and discussing a series of examples of translation of English third-person pronouns,this paper will contribute to a more comprehensive study in the future.
