| Ideas such as people-oriented and lifelong development for each student are deeply at the core of education reform. In recent years, the ministry of education has advocated reducing the burden for students, that is,reducing unnecessary assignments for students. In fact,in the current education,it is not difficult to find many problems with the current English homework, which manifests itself in the existence of mechanized and repetitive assignments that do not promote students’ core competence.Stratified homework is an important part of stratified teaching, which is based on students’ different learning abilities, learning needs, etc, and is tailored to students’ needs, targeted to improve the relevance and effectiveness of homework. Its fundamental purpose is to promote students’ overall and lifelong development. This research uses interviews, questionnaires and collects students’ stratified homework to analyze and study the situation of stratified homework in a high school in Guiyang, aiming at understanding the current situation of stratified homework implementation in the high school.Accordingly, the author proposes the following research questions:(1)What are the attitudes of students and teachers toward stratified homework?(2)What are the problems with teachers’ current stratified homework and what are the causes of the problems?(3)What are the suggestions for teachers to implement stratified homework? The author’s research reveals that the teachers interviewed had positive attitudes toward English tiered work. They all think that stratified homework is the current trend of education development and is the way to truly achieve quality education. At the same time, most of the students think they have benefited a lot from stratified homework, but some of them still think that the stratified homework is not helpful to their English learning. After the survey, among teachers who practice stratified homework, the standard for students’ stratified homework is based on students’ grades, and the practice of stratified homework is not reasonable enough;the stratified homework assigned by teachers lacks comprehensiveness;low frequency of stratified homework;the types of stratified homework lack variety and innovation;the homework is evaluated in a single way and lacks relevance;and stratified homework is difficult to implement.Through analysis, the main reasons for these problems are as follows: First, teachers have insufficient awareness of stratified homework and insufficient theoretical understanding of it.Second, teachers are in a unified system of management, and their teaching needs to meet the school’s overall coordination and planning. This has led to a situation where teachers have less room for autonomy. The unified examination system,i.e.,the college entrance examination,is the most important influence mentioned by the teachers during the interviews.Teachers indicate that they have no choice but to assign a lot of mechanical exercises to their students in order to improve students’ test scores in a short period under the pressure of the college entrance examination. Then, the teachers’ understanding of English as a subject is insufficient,i.e.,they emphasize the instrumental aspect of English and tend to ignore its humanistic aspect. Finally, the neglect of students’ non-intellectual factors also contributes to the problem.Accordingly, the author also makes suggestions.First of all, teachers should pay attention to the stratification criteria for students and assignments.Furthermore,it is important to learn more about theories related to stratified homework. In addition, teachers should study the English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School carefully and interpret it further. Finally, ensuring multiple evaluation is the key to implementing stratified homework. All in all, stratified homework is meaningful for students’ learning, but how to assign stratified homework that truly meets students’ learning abilities and needs is something that teachers need to address and explore in the future. In addition, there are still some shortcomings in this study, which will be further explored in future practice. |
