| On October 22nd,2022,the 20th National Congress of the CPC was concluded.President Xi Jinping delivered the speech of Holding High the Great Banner of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and Striving in Unity to Build a Modern Socialist Country in All Respects(also known as the 20th National Congress Report). The translation of the report,as one of the most important publicity-oriented translation texts in recent years, was highly praised by experts and scholars both at home and abroad.Against this background, this thesis aims to analyze the translation of the report from the three dimensions of socio-semiotics(referential meaning, linguistic meaning, and pragmatic meaning)and employs Professor Chen Hongwei’s theory of "correspondence in meaning and similarity in function" as the translation standard to measure the equivalence between the original text and the translated text to figure out why the translation of the report is well-received by people in English-speaking countries. Thus,to offer references for future publicity-oriented translation practices. In writing this thesis, the author downloaded both the Chinese and English versions of the 20th National Congress Report from the official website(xinhuanet.com)to create a parallel text, and selected examples on the basis of vocabulary, sentences, and paragraphs to analyze the equivalence between the original text and its translation in detail.Based on the analysis, the author finds that due to some untranslatability caused by cultural gaps, the translated text has difficulty in achieving full correspondence with the original text in terms of referential meaning, linguistic meaning, and pragmatic meaning. However,by reproducing similar functions in the translation, the dynamic equivalence is preserved to the largest extent, and the translated text can generate similar effects as its original. Therefore, the translated text’s duty as a publicity-oriented translation can be fulfilled. |
