Under the framework of Halliday’s register theory, the thesis establishes a quality assessment model for commercial investigation reports translation. It takes European Business in China Position Paper as the research object, analyzes whether it achieves register equivalence and realizes the meta-functions of the source text, and offers suggestions for improvements. The equivalence of the above three dimensions and the realization of the meta-functions are the key indicators for assessing the translation quality of the report.First of all,the thesis reviews the past research on commercial investigation reports translation, and summarizes the results and limitations. Then, the thesis introduces register theory and its three variables of field, tenor, and mode, and analyzes the feasibility of its application to translation quality assessment. The thesis proposes a quality assessment model for commercial report translation by combining the three variables and the three meta-functions of language.Based on the assessment model, the thesis evaluates whether field, tenor, and mode equivalence are achieved in the six categories of texts in the translation(vocative texts, introductory texts, laws and regulations, advice proposal, metaphorical expressions, and abbreviations),and analyzes whether the ideational, interpersonal and textual functions are realized to achieve good translation effects. The author draws the following conclusions. The translator of European Business in China Position Paper adopts translation strategies such as modality shifts, foreignization, and explicitation to align the mood, modality, information structure, and lexical choice of the translation with the source text thus realizing the three meta-functions.Register analysis helps translators understand the non-lingual information of the report, thus enhancing the effect of translation. In the translation process, the equivalence of the three dimensions should be pursued to the greatest extent possible, but when conflicts arise, priority should be given to satisfying the ideational function of the text,i.e.achieving field equivalence,to reflect the professionalism and accuracy of commercial investigation reports.
