An Exploration Of The Musical Technique And Emotional Implications Of The Zheng Song "Ding Feng Bo"

As the first work composed by young guzheng player Deng Yiqun,the piece is based on Su Shi’s poem of the same name,which abstractly recreates the mood of "walking slowly in the wind and rain",with the intention of presenting an optimistic and open-minded humanistic spirit.The composer,as a guzheng player,has a clearer focus on technique in order to express a spiritual mood-especially on the technique of the left and right hands and the expression of emotion in the technique,thus achieving an organic unity between technique and emotion in the work.In addition,the zheng piece Ding Feng Bo is similar to most new works of contemporary folk instrumental music: the subject matter is taken from classical poetry,which provides a clear guide to understanding the expressive imagery of the music,but whether the emotional meaning of the poems can be expressed through performance is a topic that has been under constant consideration during the writing of this paper,and will be considered and analysed through the analysis and argumentation in this paper.The first chapter focuses on the context of the work and analyses the artistic features of the theme from within the musical structure;the second chapter analyses the artistic expression of the work based on the performance technique,thus forming an overall understanding of the formal elements(technical)and emotional expression(artistic)of the work.The third chapter is based on the analysis of performance techniques and further considers how the poetic imagery can be used to present this classical mood in the notes through the acoustic melody,and how the tensions in the performance techniques can be conveyed to the expression of emotion in the secondary composition of the musical work,creating the emotional meaning desired by the composer.
