A Report On The Translation Of Petroleum Reservoir Management (Chapter 4)

Petroleum plays an inestimable role in ensuring economic stability and promoting social development.Hence,it’s particularly vital to translate petroleum technology text accurately,in order that domestic scholars and petroleum practitioners have a better understanding of the management of foreign petroleum industry.The source text is selected from Chapter 4 of the first edition of Petroleum Reservoir Management published by Chemical Rubber Company Press in 2022 written by Ashok K.Pathak,introducing the significance of reservoir health and its impact on reservoir performance.After analyzing the source text,it is found that the words are rigorous,with terms,compounds and acronyms used frequently;the structures of sentences are compact,using long and compound sentences continually;besides,the discourse is coherent.According to Newmark’s text typology theory,the selected text can be categorized as informative text in that it underlines the precise transmission of the content.The translation practice report analyzes these problems from lexical,syntactic and textual levels based on the theory,and the corresponding solutions are proposed as follows.This report adopts the accuracy of terminology,the integrity of acronym and the conversion of part of speech to achieve the precision of vocabulary;the report adjusts the order of sentence and segments sentence to translate long and compound sentence better;it adopts conjunction supplement and semantic supplement to realize the logical coherence of the discourse.It is hoped that the translation practice report may enrich the application of text typology theory in the translation of petroleum technology text and provide certain reference for the similar texts.
