With the advance of China’s diplomatic agenda and the elevation of the importance of China’s diplomatic discourse, the style of China’s diplomatic discourse has also changed since the 18th CPC National Congress.A diachronic corpus-based study on the style of China’s diplomatic discourse since the 18th CPC National Congress is carried out to verify the new features of the style of China’s diplomatic discourse, and analyze the application of translation strategies within the framework of Adaptation Theory. The study takes the remarks of MFA spokespersons at press conferences from 2008 to 2022 as the corpus, and divides them into three phrases.By identifying five annotation types:simile and metaphor, buzzword, proverb, ancient poetry and idiom, humor and sarcasm, analyzing the frequency and distribution of each annotation type in each phrase, and verifying the changes in the style of diplomatic discourse through quantitative and qualitative analysis, the following conclusions were drawn.1)There have been changes in the style of China’s diplomatic discourse since the 18th Party Congress. The main changes are:the frequency of each annotation type increases over time, with the most significant increase in the third phase(2018-2022).In addition, among the five annotation types, ancient poetry and idiom account for the largest proportion, followed by simile and metaphor.2)China’s diplomatic discourse style becomes more colloquial, diverse and context-dependent.The prominent role of context presented in the features drives the study to approach context in diplomatic translation from two most relevant angles of investigation under the framework of Adaptation Theory:contextual correlates of adaptability and the dynamics of adaptability with some examples, and finds that translators adopt various translation strategies to adapt to specific contexts and achieve specific communicative purposes and effects. Moreover, translators are required to adopt different translation strategies for the same text in order to achieve dynamic adaptation.A high degree of political awareness and sensitivity, awareness of cultural differences, and respect for cultural diversity are also necessary for effective and accurate delivery of diplomatic discourse. The study aims to contribute to the studies on diplomatic translation, improving the construction of China’s diplomatic discourse system in the new era and China’s international discursive power.
