There are abundant works created by Paul Dukas,a French composer, throughout his lifetime, among which Villanelle exists as a mere track he composed for French horn and piano.Beautify its melody gracefully, highlight the theme distinctly, and successfully integrate the various playing techniques of the French horn into it.Therefore, this work has become one of the classic repertoire performed with the French horn.Villanelle is divided into five sections, and has undergone six rhythmic changes overall. Each reproduction of the alteration of its theme along with the rhythm brings people different feelings,as if they are standing in the field, basking in the relish of the scenery at distinct stages. In addition to the fundamental performance methods, the composer also supplements the work with techniques like obstruent, sordino sustains, vibrato and others.Seemingly,it is an effortless play judging from the music score, while as a matter of fact,it’s tricky when it comes to performing practically, and certain requirements are demanded for the comprehensive quality of the performers as well. This paper discusses the creation background of Villanelle, the composition structure, and performing skills, etc.,further dissects the track by conducting musical form analysis and technical analysis, and on the basis of the problems encountered during the process of the performance and the relevant solutions and comparing with executants’ different styles while they play their music, puts forward corresponding perspectives;by means of combining theory and practice, rendering the ability for performers to be closely in line with the composer’s intention of creating this work when playing as well as to accurately express the musical sensibility contained in it.
