| Paul Auster,a late-blooming avant-garde novelist in American contemporary literature.has multiple identities such as the poet, screenwriter, director and writer. His bold and sharp brushwork, flexible language style, and various writing content following the turns of the times, keep his works alive. In the middle stage of Auster’s writing career, his style and tone gradually shifted from postmodernist literary experiment to realism and humanistic concern. The description of many American social and cultural elements, such as collective identity.body perception and social memory, became the focus of writing in this period. Before that, the research perspective of Auster’s novels mainly concentrated on exploring the various features and textual phenomena of postmodernism style. The paper selects Timbuktu and Leviathan as the main research objects, with reference on Auster’s other novels after the 1990s.In his works, body writing is regarded as the key to answer the living state and emotional problems of Americans, and the interpretation vision turns to the realistic meaning and metaphor behind the absurd and bizarre plots. This paper advances the three body perspectives of animal, female and socialized body, seeking generality and commonality in diverse fields of social body writing. It explores the relationship between subjective body and socialized body from the perspective of origin, adding more clues and interpretive perspectives for the construction of ecological, female and socially consumptive body. The main body of the thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter focuses on animal bodies different from human physiological and psychological structures. The paper reveals the status of animals as the "others" in human culture and analyses Auster’s creative anthropomorphic animal "experiment" to interpret the new role of animals as human companions in the vision of Cyberspace.A complete story will be connected with animal vision with human space. The second chapter focuses on the current existence of the female body. With the help of typical female characters in the novel and their physical behavior characteristics,it discusses the transformation and liberation of the female body as well as the subject, which has been in contrary for a long time.It sorts out and summarizes the body control pair of "breaking the tradition" and "being gentle and restrained",introducing the concept of feminist animal ethics. The paper proves and deepens the collusion and close relationship between female body and animal ethics. The final chapter, serving as the last aspect of the three perspectives of interpretation, finally reaches the overall social attribute. It completes form of the body in this part after the discussion of the two special social groups, and marks the complete completion of the comprehensive views of the body under the social metaphor. This part will answer questions about identity in the construction of the body, the madness of the body and the consumption of the body as a political symbol. With the help of the characters’ counterintuitive and rule-subverting behavior language, the physical reality of anti-discipline and rebellion will be explored,as well as the physical status of the novel with the participation of multiple social elements. Thus, the social subject in contradiction, struggle and complex change will be presented, which constitutes the macro picture of the body narrative and culture in contemporary American society.By deeply concluding the diversified body vision contained in Auster’s novels, the author’s body concept and value orientation hidden behind the writings are explored, and the body kingdom under the writer’s will and group social norms are constructed from the text return and reflection of the real society,so as to expand the research thinking in the cultural field of Auster’s novels. |
