The Princess Ida was written by the English composer Arthur Sullivan and the playwright William·S·Gilbert.This work has been a classic on the Western opera stage and is still frequently performed today.The rebellious "Princess Ida" in the play challenges the stereotyped image of women,shows the female image boldly pursuing her own career and love,and embodies the composer and playwright’s wish to advocate the feminist independence.The paper is centered on how to shape the "Princess Ida" on the opera stage to convey to the audience a refreshing impression.This paper researches two arias and a quartet of "Princess Ida" in four parts.The introductory section describes the significance of the paper,the current state of research,and the methodology.Chapter One introduces Sullivan and Gilbert,explores the creation background of The Princess Ida,the plot outline,the characters and their relationship in the play.By analyzing the role of "Princess Ida",the author sums up the core of her deep thought of attachment and self-consciousness.The second chapter is the two classical arias and a quartet of music noumenon analysis.It analyzes the musical structure,tonality and harmony,and melody and accompaniment.The third chapter,based on the analyses of the first two chapters,explores the singing language and skills,and stage performance of the two classic arias and a quartet of "Princess Ida".It also further interprets the vivid personality of "Princess Ida".
