A Study On The Meaning Construction Of Multimodal Metaphor And Metonymy In The Documentary About Beijing Winter Olympics From The Perspective Of Visual And Aural Grammar

As a cognitive mode,metaphor and metonymy are widely used in the process of thinking,understanding concepts and exchanging views.Their essence is to understand abstract concepts by means of tangible things.In recent years,conceptual metaphor and metonymy,which used to be limited to the linguistic field,have gradually expanded to image and sound and other modes,and the study of multimodal metaphor and metonymy has emerged.However,existing researches pay little attention to the meaning of multimodal discourse itself,and the research objects are mostly cartoons,advertisements,etc.Therefore,this research will take the Beijing Winter Olympics documentary About Winter as the research object,identify the multimodal metaphor and metonymy and their meaning construction on the basis of fully understanding the content of multimodal discourse,and explore the cognitive mechanism behind the modal symbols,aiming at providing new ideas for multimodal discourse analysis.It also provides some enlightenment for the study of multimodal metaphor and metonymy.In this study,visual grammar is used to interpret the meaning and role of various modal symbols in the documentary as well as the overall discourse content,laying a foundation for the identification and interpretation of multimodal metaphor and metonymy.The study finds that,first of all,the visual mode,auditory mode and linguistic mode in the documentary play a role at the same time,jointly constructing the overall meaning of the documentary,showing the preparation process of the Beijing Winter Olympics from multiple perspectives.Secondly,after identifying the multimodal metaphor and metonymy in the documentary,it is found that there are mainly five categories of multimodal metaphor in the documentary,which are organism metaphor,war metaphor,journey metaphor,stage metaphor and plant metaphor.There are four categories of multimodal metonymy:Consequent stands for antecedent;Individual entity stands for the collection;Subevent stands for complex event;Spatial parts stand for spatial whole.After analyzing all categories of metaphor and metonymy,it is found that their meanings are constructed by complementation of various modes.Finally,by studying the interaction between multimodal metaphor and metonymy,it is found that they form a conceptual system together.People rely on this system to understand modal symbols and grasp the whole meaning of multimodal discourse.This study discusses the meaning construction of multimodal metaphor and metonymy from both functional and cognitive aspects,offering a new perspective for metaphor research.This study is also helpful for documentary producers to create more colorful and wonderful documentaries with a better communication effect,and has reference significance for documentary production.For audiences,identifying the metaphor and metonymy in documentaries can help them have a new understanding of their content.
