| As France’s first North African possession,Algeria experienced 132 years of French colonial rule.Driven by geographical ties and the Enlightenment, the French government saw Algeria as an extension of France, not a colony. In this context, the French colonial government implemented Algeria’s Assimilation Policy. As the main way to spread French culture, education naturally became an important part of assimilation policy.Throughout the colonial period, although the French colonial government made some attempts to promote native education.Examples include building bilingual schools, promoting Berber education, and allowing Algerian girls to attend school, but even at the height of colonial education after World War II,only a handful of indigenous students had access to French education. As an important part of assimilation policy, education is essentially a means for French colonists to assimilate aborigines from the spiritual level.By promoting education, the colonists wanted to cultivate supporters of French culture,so as to cultivate their own assistants to maintain their colonial rule.More than one hundred years of colonial education has had a profound influence on both the traditional education system and the colonial rule of France. In addition, the important role that French plays in Algerian society today is also related to the long period of colonial education. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, this paper is divided into three chapters, the specific content of which is as follows: The first chapter mainly discusses the concept of "assimilation" in the colonial context and the background of the introduction of assimilation policy. This thesis analyzes the philosophical basis and purpose of the assimilation policy, namely, the French,as a "superior " race, have the responsibility to "civilize" Africans and bring Africa into the "modern" society. The second chapter describes the development of French education in Algeria during the colonial period in three stages, and analyze how colonial education served assimilation policies and colonial rule at different times. The third chapter mainly discusses the influence of colonial education, from the Algerian education itself, colonial rule and Algerian society three aspects of the discussion, specifically explains the role of education in colonial rule and its legacy. |
