A Foregrounding Study Of Xu Yuanchong’s Poetic Quality Translation From The Perspective Of Literary Stylistics

Literary stylistics has integrated the merits of literature and linguistics into a new discipline,which uses the linguistic approach to analyze literary text.Mr.Xu’s Chinese ancient poetry translation has ever triggered considerable and heated discussion in literature and translation circle,so the research about Xu’s translation of ancient Chinese poetry is instrument in improving speed and pace of Chinese ancient culture.The thesis studies Xu Yuanchong’s translation strategy from the perspective of literary stylistics,which can take advantage of its linguistic devices to analyse language skills in detail and investigate how Xu Yuanchong conveys the poetic quality of the original poem and his different translation methods with foreign translators.On the basis of comparative analysis method and text close reading analysis method,the thesis has investigated numerous research data and theses and made a comparison between Xu Yuanchong’s translation and foreign scholars’ translation.The study finds that some foreign scholars usually translate Chinese ancient poetry into prose style rather than a kind of poem style.Furthermore,to some extent,they cannot fully understand the original meaning of Chinese poetry culture so that they translate it improperly,losing control of the original poetic quality of poem.The charm of poem lies in poetic quality that is natural difference between poetry and prose and corresponding poem style is the best way to convey original poem’s poetic quality;After investigating the vital elements of literary stylistics such as phonological devices,lexical devices,grammatical devices,semantic devices and iconic translation devices in Xu Yuanchong’s translation,the finding shows the fact that alliteration,end rhyme,rhyme and sound in phonological device,imagery,nonce formation,repetition in lexical devises,inversion,ellipsis,parallelism in grammatical devices,simile and metaphor in semantic devices and iconic translation devices have played an important role in conveying original poetic quality in English.All the deviant and parallelism elements in text have played a role of foregrounding.In a word,what’s the most significant element in the process of conveying poetic quality of poetry is that he tries hard to translate Chinese ancient poetry into corresponding English poem style.He tries to reappear in translation the elements of poetic quality of original poetry.
