“Activating the vitality of Chinese culture” is an important element in promoting cultural self-confidence and self-improvement,as well as an important condition for achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The Chinese-English translation of Chinese legal culture can further “activate the vitality of Chinese culture.” Against this background, this translation practice report selects “A New Discussion of Chinese and Western Legal Culture”(Chapter 5),entitled “Incomplete Parts of Ancient Chinese Classics”(10,149 words). This chapter cites several ancient Chinese canonical texts to interpret ancient Chinese legal phenomena from a cultural perspective, showing the profoundness and longevity of Chinese legal culture.Lefevere,a representative of the cultural translation school, developed the Rewriting Theory. The theory asserts that “different cultures are hidden behind different languages, and translation is also an exchange between different cultures;moreover,it is a Cultural Generation Strategy.” Under the guidance of Rewriting Theory, translators convey the message of the original language and spread Chinese legal culture through appropriate translation strategies, mainly discussed at three levels. At the lexical level: the translator interprets the lexical content of culture-loaded words through “Paraphrase” and “Idiomatic Translation”,expressing deep cultural connotations and making the targeted text fluent and natural. At the syntactic level: the translator deals with zero-subject sentences through “structural augmentation” and run-on sentences through “logical combination” so that the targeted text has a clear structure and smooth logic, effectively transmits the culture of the original text.At the textual level, the translator adjusts the details of the targeted text utilizing cohesive devices to achieve articulation and coherence in the translation and improve the readability of the targeted text. The practical results show that Rewriting Theory has theoretical value and practical significance in guiding the Chinese-English translation of Chinese legal culture.Appropriate translation strategies can accurately explain the content of the original text, effectively improve the quality of the translation, fully convey the connotation of Chinese legal culture, make the targeted text widely accepted by the target language readers, and further facilitate the global dissemination of Chinese culture.
