At present, with the advent of the new era, society has entered a period of rapid development, and due to the transformation of production methods, people have also generated higher pressure than before, followed by various psychological and physical problems, such as anxiety.Anxiety affects all aspects of our lives, and anxiety is more serious within the high school student group,so we need to focus on how to reduce anxiety.Studies have shown that mandala painting has an outstanding effect in intervening anxiety, but the mechanism of mandala painting to intervene in anxiety has not been determined, among which the structure of mandala and the shape of the circle, the use of color, etc.have been confirmed by studies, but whether it is possible to produce flow or mindfulness in the process of painting to reduce anxiety is still divided, studies have shown that mandala painting will trigger mindfulness or flow, thereby reducing anxiety.Flow refers to the overall feeling that people feel when they devote themselves to an activity;Mindfulness means that people need to pay attention to the present moment and believe in it unconditionally; Both emphasize the process rather than the outcome, the difference is that flow emphasizes more on the absence of self-awareness and has a goal;Mindfulness,on the other hand, emphasizes self-awareness and no goal. There are many scholars who have classified the form of mandala painting, mainly divided into coloring mandala(coloring a given mandala pattern)and painting mandala(creating in a blank circle),there are studies that prove that coloring mandala can significantly reduce anxiety levels, but there is no research on whether drawing mandala can reduce anxiety, and whether the form of mandala painting has different mechanisms of action in the process of reducing anxiety is still controversial. Therefore, this paper explores the difference in the intervention effect and mechanism of mandala painting form on high school students’ anxiety. In this paper, the first year students of the three classes were experimented with coloring mandalas, drawing mandalas, and free drawing.First, the participants were given a state anxiety scale and a mindfulness scale for the baseline measurement of the participants, and then a video about 5 minutes about the college entrance examination was played to arouse the participants’ anxiety and measure the anxiety again, and then the three groups each carried out 15 minutes of painting, and after completing the painting, the participants’ anxiety level, mindfulness level and flow level were measured again, and finally the main test hosted the participants to relax and train. After the experiment, data analysis was carried out,and the results showed that both the coloring mandala group and the mandala drawing group could significantly alleviate anxiety. The flow levels in the coloring mandala painting group and the mandala painting group were significantly higher than those in the control group(free painting group).Short-term coloring mandala painting and drawing mandala painting could not significantly improve the subjects’ mindfulness level;Flow may be the mechanism of action of short-term mandala painting to reduce anxiety. After analyzing the coloring mandala paintings and drawing mandala paintings,it was found that 23% of the colored mandala paintings appeared negative words, but did not appear in the painted mandala works, probably because creating one’s own mandala work can bring more emotional satisfaction than directly coloring the existing mandala pattern. In view of the above conclusions,it can be seen that short-term coloring mandalas and drawing mandalas can make people experience flow in the process of painting, harvest immersive satisfaction, and reduce anxiety through flow.In real life, counselors and school psychology teachers can also use mandala painting to relieve state anxiety for clients and students.
