| The author was involved in an Internet medical company’s diabetes management project, and was responsible for the remote video conference interpretation task. The conference covered topics such as medical management,IT,business,as well as diabetes treatment and professional medical information, and adequate and effective pre-interpretation preparation was crucial in the practice.Based on a 6-month practice corpus, the author explores the application of multimodality-assistance approach in the preparation of remote video conference interpretation. The interpretation project is divided into two stages. In stage A,preparation is to make a glossary of relevant subject knowledge and memorize specialized vocabulary before the interpretation task, but the output of the interpretation was not effective. To solve this problem,in stage B,the author assisted the preparation with the help of multimodality, which is presented in two types of communicative modalities:one was mainly visual modality, presented as text+picture, text+color;the other was a combination of visual modality and auditory modality, presented as text+animation+audio, text+audio. The author selected the corpus of three meetings each in the two stages with two different ways of interpretation preparation and evaluated them with Yang Chengshu’s quantitative and qualitative assessment methods, and found that the interpretation output under multimodal assisted interpretation preparation was better in terms of completeness, accuracy and fluency,as evidenced by the significant reduction in the number of misinterpretations, omissions, improper pauses and self-repair.Combining the results of the interpretation quality assessment and the questionnaire scores of interpretation service targets, the author found that multimodal-assisted preparation can help enhance interpretation performance and improve interpretation performance for interpreters without medical backgrounds who are faced with specialized medical field interpretation. |
