Interactive Installation Design Based On Menstrual Culture

With the development of feminism,the discussion of menstrual culture in mainstream discourse heats up,and the public’s attention to women’s needs and problems gradually increases,and menstrual culture has a new development.In this context,this study focuses on the expression of menstrual culture in the form of interactive devices,hoping to propose a design principle of interactive devices applicable to menstrual culture,and apply the proposed design principles to produce related works,so as to achieve the purpose of creating a new way of communication for female topics.In the exploration stage of design principles,this study studied the form of interactive device,the expression and communication characteristics of menstrual culture,and the combination of device and feminist issues through literature method,text data analysis and case analysis,and deduced four design principles:beauty and novelty content,emotional experience,multi-dimensional interaction and expression of female perspective.In the application stage of design principles,the specific forms of male menstrual culture and female menstrual culture were investigated through interviews.Based on the research content,a series of interactive devices composed of three parts is designed and implemented under the guidance of the principles.They are the blinking interactive animation"Invisible forces Control Me" based on the human eye recognition algorithm,the interactive light and image "Don’t be afraid of my Options"based on distance sensing,and the illustration "I Choose This" based on AR interaction.The three works correspond to three groups of concepts,"seeing shame","seeing needs" and "making changes",which are independent of each other but form a narrative obedience relationship.Through the evaluation of the design by observation and interview,it can be proved that the work presents a good interactive effect,which enhances users’ discussion on menstruation and improves users’ cognition of menstruation.Therefore,the design principles proposed in this paper can guide the design to achieve the purpose of promoting the public discussion of menstruation.The work scheme guides the public to talk about menstruation freely,which has certain communication value.
