| As the wave of curriculum reform emerges,the English subject is paying more and more attention to the humanistic nature of the English curriculum and its nurturing value,and the value and status of Chinese culture in English textbooks are gradually emerging,and the study of Chinese cultural content in textbooks is becoming more and more important.The research on Chinese culture in English textbooks,however,has focused on the absence of Chinese culture in English textbooks,while not much research has been done on the representation of Chinese cultural content in textbooks and its cultural connotation and nurturing value.The purpose of this study is to analyze the content and form of representation of Chinese culture in the PEP New Senior English for China,and to explore the cultural connotation and nurturing value behind the Chinese cultural content in the textbooks.The research questions of this thesis are as follows.(1)What kinds of Chinese culture are selected in PEP New Senior English for China?(2)How is the selected Chinese cultural content presented in PEP New Senior English for China?(3)What kind of nurturing value does the Chinese cultural content embody in PEP New Senior English for China?This study categorizes and analyzes the Chinese cultural content in the new version of the high school English textbook according to the Moran(2003)’s cultural classification framework and the classification of Chinese culture in the New Curriculum Standard,and also analyzes the representation of Chinese cultural content in the textbook,including the proportion of Chinese culture presented in different modules of listening,speaking,reading and writing,the different forms of representation of Chinese cultural content,and the explicit and implicit representation of Chinese cultural content.In addition,this study used content analysis method and multimodal analysis method to analyze the cultural connotation as well as the nurturing value of the Chinese cultural content in the textbooks.The results of the study are analyzed and concluded as follows.Firstly,the content of Chinese culture in the PEP New Senior English for China is diversified but unevenly distributed in terms of themes and types,among which,the content related to cultural products is the most,followed by cultural practices and cultural persons,while the content related to cultural perspectives and cultural communities accounts for the least.In terms of time,the content of Chinese traditional culture and modern culture is more,while the content of revolutionary culture is less.Secondly,the representation of Chinese cultural content in the textbook takes into account various learning skills of listening,speaking,reading and writing,however,the input pays more attention to reading than listening,and the output pays more attention to speaking than writing;it takes into account various forms and modes,but mainly focuses on two forms,pictures and texts;it also takes into account cultural input and output,but the compulsory textbook focuses on cultural input while the optional compulsory textbook focuses on cultural output.Finally,the Chinese cultural content in the PEP New Senior English for China contains rich nurturing value,including democracy,harmony,unity and solidarity,national rejuvenation,patriotism,traditional virtues and so on,and convey the nurturing requirements of cultural identity,cultural confidence and cultural inheritance.Moreover,the Chinese cultural content in the textbook shows the relationship of repetition and correlation,and the corresponding nurturing value also has the same output characteristics.Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis and research on the Chinese cultural content in the PEP New Senior English for China,the findings of this study provide insights for English teachers to understand the Chinese cultural content in English textbooks,explore its nurturing value and improve teaching of Chinese cultural content. |
