| In recent years,with the deepening of cultural exchanges between China and the West,more and more westerners are inclined to learn more about the Chinese culture through listening to Chinese stories.As a means of reflecting features of the times and expressing thoughts and feelings,literary works play an important role in cultural com-munication.Tianjin University’s Eighteen Extraordinary Scholars tells the story about18 outstanding scholars of Tianjin University who were devoted to teaching and aca-demic research in the 1960s,showing their preciseness in learning,strictness in teaching and committed patriotism,which can satisfy the needs of target readers.The decision to translate the book into English made by TJU on the occasion of its 125thanniversary is conducive to demonstrating the talent and professionalism of its excellent teachers worldwide,and thus its international influence can be further raised.This report is based on the translation practice of Tianjin University’s Eighteen Ex-traordinary Scholars(Excerpts).Entrusted by the Publicity Department of Tianjin Uni-versity,the author has translated two chapters describing Ding Xuhuai and Wu Youzhi into English.The thesis analyzes the selection of the source text,an overall choice between adequacy and acceptability,as well as decisions made during the translation process under the guidance of Toury’s translational norms with an attempt to provide some reference for future translation practice.The report is divided into four parts.The first part gives a general description of the translation task,including the background of the task,the content and features of the source text,as well as task requirements.The second part introduces pre-translation preparation,translation implementation and proofreading.The third part is the case study,in which Toury’s translational norms and its guiding role in the translation of Tianjin University’s Eighteen Extraordinary Scholars(Excerpts)are explained.It also sheds light on the translation methods and skills adopted at lexical,syntactic and textual levels by examples under the guidance of translational norms,so as to confirm the appli-cability of this theory in the translation practice.The last part is the conclusion,which summarizes the experience gained from the translation practice as well as its limitations. |
