A Report On The Chinese-english Translation Of Trade Union Documents From The Perspective Of Peter Newmark’s Translation Theory

At the beginning of the third decade of 21 century,China’s open-door development is guided by the idea of a community with a shared human destiny to build a peaceful and wealthy world.Tianjin,as one of the most important cities of north China,is making its unique contribution.The translation material of the essay is based on the report of the Third Congress of Balitai Township Trade Union of Jinnan District.The translation practice is under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation.By discussing from the aspects of information shift,cultural difference preservation as well as function transference,the essay aims to find out specific application situation and methods of communicative translation and semantic translation in document translation.Findings of the essay are as follows: 1.When language effects of the original text cannot be produced in translated text by translating literally,communicative translation could serve as a guidance.Communicative translation is also applied when language logic and means of expression need to be adjusted,for example,by means of changing the original syntax and integrating information.2.Semantic translation is applied when the target text is able to transfer the information by maintaining original language structure.Furthermore,for transferring information and reserving culture differences,annotations can be supplied under the guidance of semantic translation.3.When the above-mentioned situations appear in one text simultaneously,the two translation methods can be used together to guide the translation practice.In a conclusion,communicative translation helps to clear the sophisticated language logic and integrate similar information.Semantic translation helps to preserve culture differences.In terms of document translation,semantic translation can be used to introduce China’s realities and local features.Therefore,Newmark’s translation theory is appropriate in guiding document translation.
