A Study On The Chinese Translation Of Pronouns In English Novel

Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory,this report mainly focuses on the translation methods of central pronouns and relative pronouns by taking My Experiences at Nan Shan and Port Arthur with the Fifth East Siberian Rifles as an example.It is very important to correctly comprehend various pronouns as they are usually used to refer to characters and things in the text.Predecessors’ studies on the Chinese translation of English pronouns in novels are limited to the studies of personal pronouns.There are,however,few studies on the translation of relative pronouns,possessive pronouns and reflexive pronouns that frequently appear in novels.Therefore,this report focuses on the English-Chinese translation of central pronouns and relative pronouns in novels,which attempts to address the problems encountered in the translation of pronounsThis report illustrates the feasibility of the translation methods by enumerating the examples of Chinese translation of English sentences containing central pronouns and relative pronouns in the text.After a long time of consideration and literature research,the author concludes four methods in the Chinese translation of English pronouns in novels: literal translation,restoration,ellipsis and substitution.By means of these four methods,the central pronouns and relative pronouns in the text can be accurately translated,and the problems of vague reference and redundant translation about English pronouns in novels can be addressed.What is more,these methods enable the translated texts to be concise and correct,which avoids translationese.Thus,this report provides a possible way to solving the problems of the Chinese translation of English pronouns.On the basis of previous studies,this report expands the research scope of the Chinese translation of English pronouns in novels,summarizes the translation methods which are suitable for the Chinese translation of English pronouns in novels,and solves the problems frequently encountered in the Chinese translation of English pronouns in novels.Moreover,this report proves the feasibility of applying the communicative translation theory to guide the translation of English novel.In addition,through the translation of this novel,more historical details can be uncovered.It can also attract and inspire more people to learn from this period of history.
