"Life Weekly" And The Shaping Of Shanghai’s Modern Family Concept

At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the The Republic of China period,the West gradually learned from the East,China’s political system and social form began to change.As a basic component of society,the concept and system of the family are also in the process of change.After the May Fourth New Culture Movement,Western family concepts and related works were introduced into China by Chinese intellectuals,and had a wide impact through the propaganda of the press.For a long time,the study of modern family reform has been attracting the attention of domestic academic circles,and the research results are mainly concentrated in the field of history.Therefore,from the perspective of media history and conceptual history,the author will use "Life Weekly" as a research text to sort out the shaping process and characteristics of Shanghai’s modern family concept,and explore the deep relationship between modern newspapers and periodicals and Shanghai family concept.The study found that in its interactions with readers,"Life Weekly" paid keen attention to the family problems commonly faced by Shanghai’s working youth."Life Weekly" presents the ideal concept form of "small family" from the three stages of love,marriage and family,through the comparison of "big family" and "small family".In the process of constructing the concept of "small family",in order to intensify the contradictory relationship between the two,"Life Weekly" exaggerated the opposition between the city representing the small family and the village representing the large family.When it comes to finding that the Western concept of love does not apply to "small family",they often choose to ignore their improprieties.While focusing on creating a perfect image of housewife,it also objectively deepens the double oppression of women in family and profession.Finally,in order to explore the reasons why "Life Weekly" shaped the concept of "small family",the author analyzed the relationship between the concept of family,"Life Weekly" and the readership.The author found that the attention and discussion of family issues is in fact a common need of "Life Weekly" and its readership,which arises from the common choice of the two.After the concept of "small family" is gradually accepted by society,as a glue,the communication between newspapers and readers is continued,forming a relationship of mutual coexistence,making the concept of "small family" more and more deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.After the September 18 th Incident,"Life Weekly" used the concept of family as a stepping stone to stimulate the political consciousness of Shanghai’s professional youth groups,so that many of them developed into progressive forces in the process of the Chinese revolution.
