A Metrological Stylistic Study Of The Linguistic Characteristics Of Chen Yan’s Novels

As a prominent figure in contemporary literature,Chen Yan,with over ten years of experience in drama creation,is well versed in the importance of characters,vocabulary,and sentences in the text.Analyzing the language characteristics of his novels has become an insurmountable topic in studying the value of his works.As of now,there are only a few relevant interpretations on the language aspects of Chen Yan’s four novels.We have found that introspective qualitative analysis seems to be a common feature of these studies,and the research results rely on subjective judgment,making it difficult to guarantee scientific validity.If relevant computer software is introduced to quantify the text,the visualized research results will be more accurate and systematic.Therefore,this article attempts to conduct a mathematical analysis of Chen Yan’s four novels through the research method of bibliometric stylistics,exploring the language features in Chen Yan’s four novels from three aspects:characters,vocabulary,and sentences.The introduction section of this article provides a brief introduction to Chen Yan and his works,and elaborates on the reasons for the topic selection,research significance,and application value.At the same time,a review was conducted on the research status of bibliometrics and Chen Yan’s novels both domestically and internationally.Finally,the research methods for this study were summarized,and the key and difficult points in the research process were outlined.The first chapter of this article collects four novels by Chen Yan,including "The Story of Xijing","The Set","The protagonist",and "Comedy".A corpus of over 1.64 million words has been established,which mainly includes five processes: corpus construction,format conversion,corpus cleaning and denoising,word segmentation and part of speech tagging,and manual proofreading.The following work is based on the four existing corpora.The second chapter of this article summarizes the total word count of Chen Yan’s four novels and analyzes the special characters of English letters and numbers that appear in the text of the novels.We found that Chen Yan’s four novels have a total of 1643761 characters,and in these four novels,Chen Yan uses English letters to depict the emotions or personality traits of the characters in the novels;By using numbers to represent professional knowledge in a certain area;By using special symbols“ ×” denotes foul language.The third chapter of this article analyzes the elements of word length,word frequency,vocabulary richness,parts of speech,and special words in Chen Yan’s four novels.We found that in terms of word length,the use of monosyllabic and disyllabic words in Chen Yan’s four novels is more concentrated,with more short words;In terms of word frequency,Chen Yan’s four novels have a rich variety of common and unique high-frequency words(totaling 100words)and keywords;In terms of vocabulary richness,Chen Yan’s four novels have significant changes in word length and class symbols,with a higher proportion of single word occurrences,a higher vocabulary density,and a richer use of words;In terms of parts of speech,Chen Yan’s four novels are very flexible in their use of parts of speech,striving for innovative and vivid language use,and strong visual effects.It is worth mentioning that Chen Yan extensively uses Shaanxi dialect words,swear words,and color words in his four novels,which greatly enhances the uniqueness and richness of the textual language.The fourth chapter of this article analyzes elements such as sentence length,average sentence length,text rhythm,and sentence ending rhyme.We found that in terms of sentence length and average sentence length,the first novel "The Story of Xijing" had the most sentences and the average sentence length was the largest,while the last novel "Comedy" had the least sentences and the average sentence length was the smallest,reflecting the trend of language development from long sentences to short sentences in Chen Yan’s four novels;In terms of sentence dispersion,Chen Yan’s four novels exhibit a characteristic of stabilization;The special use of punctuation mark not only strengthens the tone,but also plays a role in enriching the characters,making the text of short stories more rhythmic.In terms of rhyme at the end of sentences,Chen Yan’s four novels often use rhymes such as Tongshi Yidong,Xiaoshi Sihao,and Dangshi Qiyang,enhancing the rhythmic beauty and dramatic effect of the novel language.The fifth chapter of this article analyzes the language characteristics and causes of Chen Yan’s novels from both subjective and objective factors.We have found that the language characteristics of Chen Yan’s novels are richness,liveliness,and ease in daily life;In terms of causes,the subjective factors of the author include his family background,personal experience,knowledge accumulation,and moral realm.The objective factors are mainly regional culture,which directly or indirectly affect and restrict the formation of language features in Chen Yan’s novels.
