Textbooks are important curriculum resources and medium for the realization of curriculum goals.Since the new curriculum standards for general senior high school came into effect,new textbooks have been gradually introduced nationwide.In the autumn semester of 2021,DX Senior High School in Guangxi started to use the textbook “New Standard English”(NSE)by FLTRP(2019).Although there are numerous studies analyzing and evaluating textbooks,research on textbook use remains limited.The compilation and use of the new textbook reflect the implementation requirements of the ECS.Investigation and understanding of the use of the textbook can help to learn about its real use situation and influencing factors,which is of great significance to optimize the use of the textbook and improve the teaching quality and curriculum implementation.Based on Tyler’s Basic Principles of Curriculum and the stipulations of curriculum standards on the textbook use,this research adopts the curriculum implementation perspective and employs questionnaire surveys,interviews,and classroom observations to investigate the use of the “New Standard English”(NSE)textbook in DX Senior High School.The specific research questions include: 1)How is the status of the use of the new textbook NSE? 2)What problems do teachers and students encounter while using the textbook? 3)How do teachers and students deal with the problems encountered while using the textbook?The results show that 1.There is still a gap between the use of textbooks and the requirements of curriculum standards.Teachers think that the textbook is not suitable for their students and rarely use some parts like “Listening and Speaking”.Teachers’ insufficient understanding of curriculum standards,improper use of teaching materials,and students’ insufficient English bring problems to the use of the textbook.2.While using the textbook,teachers find that it is not easy to understand the interdisciplinary knowledge in the textbook,and the requirements for the mastering of new words confuse teachers.Some activities in the textbook are difficult to conduct,and many new words in the text make it difficult for students to read and understand the text,and it is not easy for the students to complete some activities set in the textbook.Students seldom preview or review the text and seldom use the "Reflection" in each unit to evaluate the learning effect.3.Teachers improve their professional skills by actively attending training programs,referencing online resources,relevant books,forming teaching research groups,conducting research projects,and collaborating on lesson planning.Additionally,they simplify or adapt some activities in the textbook according to the students’ need and utilize exercises or test questions from supplementary books.Teachers try to use various teaching methods to help students better understand the text,and under the guidance of relevant learning strategies,students’ interest in learning has significantly increased.In particular,students have learned to use vocabulary learning software and memory strategies,leading to an increase in vocabulary,and engaging actively with related learning activities.It is suggested that teachers should pay more attention to and be familiar with the curriculum standards,and broaden their scope of knowledge to meet the requirements of the curriculum reform.At the same time,At the same time,teachers should understand the purpose of textbook design and make full use of textbooks and change the simple evaluation method,encourage students to consciously improve their learning methods according to the requirements of curriculum standards,and adopt a variety of learning methods to improve the overall level of English.The process of using textbook is a crucial element in implementing the curriculum.The investigation and research on the use of textbook can better investigate the teaching design effect of new textbooks and the implementation of goals,so as to better promote the coordination between textbook writers and textbook users and further improve the level of foreign language teaching.
