Nowadays, the social development has entered the era of knowledge economy, and the competition among cities in the future will be the competition of talents. However, under the background of increasing living cost and employment pressure in first-tier cities,it has become a new trend for young intellectual migrants to flow to second-tier cities instead of only seeking economic opportunities in first-tier cities. Therefore, the driving force of highly educated and highly skilled migrants should not only consider economic factors, but also need a more comprehensive analysis framework to comprehensively analyze the location-selection mechanism of young intellectual migrants. Moreover, young intellectual migrants are not a homogenous group, and there are heterogeneity within gender and educational background.Different types of young intellectual migrants also have different demands and perceptions of economic, educational and medical chances in the places they move to.The object of this study is "young intellectual migrants" aged 22-35 who have a bachelor’s degree or above and have lived in the study ares for a long time(one year or more)and whose place of origin is not the case place. Moreover, this study proposes the concept of life chances combining economic factors and non-economic factors, and sets the specific dimensions of life chances in combination with the situation of literature and cases. Then,it takes young intellectual migrants in Zhuhai as the research object. This paper explores the perception characteristics and differences of different types of young intellectual migrants on the life chances in the case, and then discusses the influence of life chances and personal characteristics on the long-term settlement intention of young intellectual migrants in Zhuhai, and sorts out the mechanism of location selection of young intellectual migrants based on this study. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)In the context of scholars’ research and specific cases, this study divides life chances into seven first-level dimensions:accessibility, economic, medical environmental, urban leisure, culture(education),and policy,(2)Under the influence of poor life chances such as high housing prices and fast pace of life in first-tier cities, young intellectual migrants are less willing to move to(new)first-tier cities. In this study,Zhuhai,a second-tier city in the Pearl River Delta,is selected as the case,it is found that: With the continuous development of second-tier cities in developed areas, their economic chances in terms of salary and working environment are close to that of first-tier cities, and they can provide better environmental chances than first-tier cities. Many young intellectual migrants believe that living in second-tier cities in developed areas such as Zhuhai can better maintain a balance between work and life.(3)From the perspective of the difference in perception of life chances, intellectual migrants of different genders have obvious differences in the perception of economic chances and educational(cultural)chances.Female intellectual migrants generally show lower satisfaction than male in the perception of economic chances and cultural(educational)chances.(4)Young intellectual migrants with different educational backgrounds also have significant differences in the satisfaction perception of economic(work)chances, environmental chances and policy chances.Young intellectual migrants with bachelor degree have a relatively low satisfaction perception of economic chances. This study takes Zhuhai as the case area and analyzes the current new trend of young intellectual migrants under the theoretical framework of life chances, which can enrich the empirical study of this theory in China and provide useful suggestions for talent development policies in China’s future cities.
