English reading is not only an important way for students to acquire knowledge, but also one of the language skills they must master. Therefore, junior high school English teachers should not only impart language knowledge in reading class but also teach students’ reading skills, stimulate their reading interest, and cultivate their good reading habits.According to the New Standard of English Curriculum(2022),teachers must help students activate prior knowledge and make connections with new information.Students must also learn to conduct independent inquiry and work cooperatively. However, the current English reading teaching has not reached the expected teaching effect,so it is particularly important to find a more effective reading teaching method.KWL reading model was proposed by Donna Ogle in 1986.He divides the reading class into three stages to activate students’ previous knowledge, guide them to ask questions independently and summarize what they have learned. This study takes 106 students from two parallel classes in Grade Seven of Xishui No.8 Middle School as the research subjects. The two classes respectively adopt the KWL reading model and traditional grammar-translation method to conduct a four-month teaching experiment, which uses tests, questionnaires,an interview and SPSS27.0 as the research instruments. This research attempts to introduce KWL reading model into junior high school English reading teaching in order to understand the difficulties in English reading, stimulate their reading interest and improve their reading performance. The research questions are as follows:(1)What is the current situation of junior high school students’ English reading learning?(2)What effects can be achieved on students’ English reading interest after the teaching of KWL reading model?(3)To what extent can they improve their English reading performance after the teaching of KWL reading model? Before the experiment, the current situation of junior high school students’ reading learning questionnaire, junior high school students’ reading interest questionnaire and the pre-test are conducted in the experimental and the control classes to understand the current reading learning status, reading interest and reading performance of students. The KWL reading model is conducted in the experimental class after a thorough analysis of the issues and factors affecting Grade Seven students’ reading and the author’s own teaching experience. After the experiment, the reading interest questionnaire and the post-test is conducted in the experimental class and the control class. To understand the impact of KWL reading model on students’ reading interest and reading performance. The collected data is analyzed through SPSS27.0,and the results of the study show that:(1)Current junior high school students lack English reading motivation, good reading habits and reading strategies.(2)KWL reading model can effectively improve students’ interest in reading.(3)After the experiment, the experimental class students’ reading performance significantly increases while it barely changes for the control class students. Finally, this research draws the following pedagogical implications: Firstly, teachers should stimulate students’ original knowledge in reading teaching.Secondly, teachers should respect students’ dominant position and give students the opportunities to ask questions and explore knowledge by themselves.Thirdly,KWL reading model can try to combine with traditional grammar-translation method to promote strengths and avoid weaknesses.
