The E-C Translation Of Mind Shift:How Culture Transformed The Human Brain(Chapter 1-3) And A Report On The Translation

The thesis encompasses three sections: source text,target text and translation report.The source text is excerpted from an academic work named Mind Shift: How Culture Transformed the Human Brain,written by John Parrington.The book is published by Oxford University Press in April 2021.The author elaborates on human mind and the highly significance of its shift,and analyzes causes and therapies of some mental disorders.The selected text(Chapter 1-3),totaling approximately 13,700 words,mainly introduces the development of human’s understanding regarding our mind,mankind’s unique traits from tool use to language,and the dispensable role of society in shaping our thought and language.According to the characteristics and style of the source text,communicative translation theory proposed by Peter Newmark is employed as the guidance to address different translation problems confronted with over the course of translation.Through studying Newmark’s discussion of the theory,the author summarizes three major principles: averting comprehension difficulty of readers;pursuing to convey the author’s intention;emphasizing on the target language.Thus,obscurity and ambiguity which may give rise to misconception or confusion should not be allowed in the target text,and the translator should convey the main force of the source text in such a way that the language is readily acceptable to target readers.There are a variety of techniques and methods utilized to let expressions in the translated text be consistent with Chinese expression habits while ensuring accurate transmission of the original content,from repetition to zero translation.This report constitutes five sections.Section one presents overviews of the original text,the author and the significance of this practice.Section two introduces the overall process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and quality control.Section three emphasizes on the analysis of communicative translation theory and its application to this practice.Section four discusses various techniques and methods utilized during the translation process,which indicates the feasibility of using the theory to guide the translation of academic texts.The last one comprises of conclusion and reflection of this practice.The significance of this translation practice lies in that it proves that it is feasible to apply communicative translation theory into the translation of an academic work,and offers reference for subsequent translation of texts with the same type.Through utilizing various techniques and methods to tackle translation barriers,she has enhanced the professional translation capability and gained valuable experience of integrating theory with practice.The target text manifests a mass of significant research and insights relevant to biology,anthropology and others,which provides a systematic summarization and novel perspective that matter to researchers of related domains and interested readers.
