The Translation Of Parentheses In Journalistic Texts

Lung cancer is a malignant tumor originating from the bronchial mucosa or gland of the lung.The incidence rate and mortality rate of the disease are increasing rapidly,and it is one of the malignant tumors that pose the greatest threat to human health and life.Smoking is one of the causes of lung cancer.The early symptoms of lung cancer are often mild,but lung cancer in advanced stage may cause death.This thesis has selected the news reports on lung cancer prevention and treatment by the New York Times from 2012 to 2022 for English-Chinese practice to understand the development on lung cancer in the United States in the past 10 years.It is hoped that this translation practice can improve Chinese readers’ understanding of lung cancer prevention and treatment.News texts belong to informative text with high information density,so they are often filled by parentheses,which can make news reports both concise and readable.In this translation practice,the problems encountered in the translation of parentheses are divided into three categories: hidden causal or conditional relations among parentheses,lengthiness of parentheses introducing people’s identity and flexible positions of parentheses indicating comparison relations.The methods of conversion and the synthesis are adopted to tackle the problem of hidden causal or conditional relations among parentheses.The methods of fusion and embedding are used to deal with lengthiness of parentheses introducing people’s identity.The methods of reversion and cutting are used to handle the problem of flexible positions of parentheses indicating comparison relations.It is hoped that this translation practice can provide some reference for the translation of medical news texts in the future.
