A Study On The Application Of POA In Senior High School English Reading Teaching

Given the exam-oriented educational environment,more teachers focus on language input than output,ignoring to train students’ ability;moreover,students passively accept problem-solving skills,which leads to separation between learning and using and some difficulty in output.Therefore,it is an urgent problem to explore how to apply the production-oriented approach(POA)to English teaching,especially its application in senior high school English classroom,and enhance the impact of English instruction in senior high school.This study applies POA to the instruction of English reading in senior high schools based on Swain’s output hypothesis and Krashen’s input hypothesis,and finds out students’ knowledge gaps through motivating stage,and selectively learns through the enabling of language,content and discourse structure.Finally,in the assessment stage,the teacher guides students to recognize the shortcomings and find the direction for the next step of learning.Three research questions are to be answered: 1.In English reading teaching in the senior high school,what impacts does POA have on students’ reading interest in senior high school English reading teaching? 2.In English reading teaching in the senior high school,what impacts does POA have on students’ reading comprehension ability? 3.In English reading teaching in the senior high school,what impacts does POA have on students’ reading performance?The author took 96 students from a senior high school in Dalian as the research subjects,respectively as the experimental class(EC)and the control class(CC).The experiment lasted for 16 weeks.While the control class uses the conventional teaching approach,the experimental class uses a production-oriented approach.The research tools are mainly composed of questionnaires(pre-questionnaire,post-questionnaire),reading tests(pre-test,post-test)and interviews.The data obtained are statistically analyzed with SPSS 25.0.The research shows that the production-oriented approach can improve the reading comprehension ability and reading interest of the students in the experimental class.In addition,compared with the control class,the experimental class students’ English reading performance has enhanced greatly after the experiment.The results of this study show that POA plays an important role in senior high school English reading teaching.By implementing the production-oriented approach in senior high school English reading class,students’ reading comprehension ability and reading interest have been significantly improved.At the same time,students’ English reading scores have also improved significantly.However,there are also many problems in this study,such as:application of POA not skillfully,individual differences of students,and external factors interfering with the experiment.In a word,this study provides some reference for the production-oriented approach in senior high school English classroom teaching.
