A Report On The C-E Translation Of Biography Of Yao Ming(Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

With the continuous development of the economy,market and life conditions,our country has started to strengthen the construction of sports and culture.The history of the People’s Republic of China has seen the emergence of many sportsmen and sportswomen who have achieved excellent results for the country with unremitting efforts and have inspired generations of young people with their spirit.Sports biographies with detailed descriptions of brilliant athletes can make readers have a deeper understanding of their life and are more conducive to spreading the sportsmanship these players have embodied.The author of this report selects Biography of Yao Ming as the translation task and try to summarizes the strategies and methods used in the process of translating sport biographies from Chinese to English.Biography of Yao Ming,published in 2012,was narrated,collated and written by Yang Yi,a famous basketball commentator in China,aiming to tell the inspiring stories of Yao Ming from his birth to his retirement.As there is no English version,it is a meaningful source of translation for an MTI student.As a basketball fan,the author has been a fan of Yao Ming since watching the game in 2005.Yao Ming prevailed among American fans with his superb basketball skills and introduced Chinese basketball to fans all over the world.His spirit of never giving up has always inspired the author to keep moving forward.Therefore,by the translation of Biography Yao Ming,the author hopes that more and more basketball fans will get to know Yao Ming Better.The paper consists of five main sections.The first chapter introduces the project,describing the background of the project,its main significance,the review of the relevant issues and the process of translation.The second chapter mainly discusses the the features of source text and requirements of the translation and prepares the way for the example study in the fourth chapter and briefly introduce the translation process.The third chapter is devoted to the theoretical foundations,introducing the Skopos Theory put forward by the German functionalist school.The case study in Chapter 4,the main body of the text,describes the combination of Skopos Theory and the specific example study in the translation of Biography of Yao Ming and makes a detailed analysis.The final chapter concludes the translation report,discussing the main findings and gains of the thesis research and translation practice,the shortcomings and suggestions of this translation report,as well as the outlook on related research and one’s own reflections.
