The English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High School(2017Edition,Revised in 2020)proposes to cultivate students’ key competences,and cultural awareness is an important component.It is a very important way to cultivate students’ cultural awareness through English lessons.This study investigates the cultivation of cultural awareness through English lessons in senior high schools and mainly aims to answer two research questions:(1)What is the current situation of cultivating senior high school students’ cultural awareness through English lessons?(2)What are the factors that influence the cultivating of senior high school students’ cultural awareness?Based on the requirements of key competences of the English discipline and the theoretical framework of communicative competence and cultural linguistics,this study uses questionnaire,interview and classroom observation to investigate the situation of 200 Grade two students and four Grade two English teachers in Zibo City,Shandong Province.The findings are most students are interested in learning cultural knowledge,but their cultural knowledge are relatively scarce.For teachers,most of them have a sense of cultural awareness,but in practice,the cultural teaching content is not deeply dug out.The cultural teaching method is single and simple.Cultural teaching activities are not diversified and teaching settings are not rich.The influencing factors are analyzed from three aspects: students,teachers and schools.
