According to General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 edition revised in 2020),improving learners’ grammar awareness through English grammar teaching has become an urgent need for all teachers.By referring to textbook use and grammar awareness theories,the present paper aims to answer two research questions:(1)How do teachers make use of grammar materials in high school textbooks(FLTRP 2019 version)to give instruction?(2)Whether teachers’ textbook use has influence on learners’ grammar awareness? If so,what influence?The questionnaire is used to examine the situation of teachers’ textbook use and learners’ grammar learning.Altogether 119 first-year students from a high school in Tianjin are chosen as research subjects.Interviews with five teachers are also designed to elicit more details about teachers’ practical use of textbooks and gain more information about learners’ grammar awareness.Besides,classroom observation scale is used to directly investigate teachers’ textbook use and the influence on learners’ grammar awareness.Questionnaire results indicate that most students are familiar with teachers’ grammar teaching,and they are generally positive about such instruction;Most students can judge the situation of their grammar learning and give different opinions.Interviews data shows that all five teachers take both inductive and deductive method of grammar teaching,and they can creatively use textbooks when the materials fail to meet students’ actual needs.Observing four lessons also reveals that participant teachers often add or modify grammar materials of the textbook to give instruction.As for students’ grammar learning,they are guided to develop three levels of grammar awareness,namely,form,meaning and use,and most of them perform well on practices.
