English Curriculum Standards for General High School(2017 edition revised in2020)lists thinking capacity as one of the four English subject core competences,of which critical thinking is an important aspect.Specifically,critical thinking includes critical thinking skill and critical thinking disposition.Among them,critical thinking disposition is the driving force of critical thinking skill and is the psychological basis for the effective development of critical thinking ability.Meanwhile,writing is also an important part of the high school English curriculum,and students’ writing cannot be achieved without the participation of thinking.Therefore,the study was conducted to explore the correlations between the senior high school students’ critical thinking disposition and their English writing achievement.In this study,questionnaires and writing tests were used to investigate the general situation of senior high school students’ critical thinking deposition and English writing achievement.A total of 252 senior one students from Tianjin No.42 middle school participated in this study.Moreover,interview is employed to gain more information about the reasons behind the correlation between critical thinking deposition and English writing achievement.The research questions are as follows:1.What is the current situation of senior high school students’ critical thinking deposition?2.What are the correlations between these students’ critical thinking deposition and their English writing achievement?3.What are the reasons of the correlation between these students’ critical thinking deposition and their English writing achievement?Through using descriptive statistical analysis,correlation analysis,and regression analysis,the results of questionnaire data reveal that these students’ critical thinking deposition are generally at moderate level.These results also show that there was a significant positive correlation between senior high school students’ critical thinking deposition and their English writing achievement.The analysis of the interview data shows that the students’ critical thinking deposition mainly influence the English writing achievement through the relevant knowledge,the understanding of the problem,the writing ideas and writing content.The results of this study provide some suggestions for teaching and learning English for senior high school: for example,teachers should encourage students to learn cooperatively and use a variety of writing evaluation methods;students should learn to use the Internet and other relevant learning resources,regular writing training can effectively improve their English writing achievement.
