| With the deepening of econ omic globalization,China’s opening up to the outside world has also been increasing, leading to many needs in translation practice, especially in the medical field.Medical literature is highly professional and obscure, requiring a high translation level.Chinese translation of foreign medical knowledge and the latest medical achievements can help healthcare workers grasp the latest medical trends and research findings abroad, and better carry out medical work, thus promoting the development of China’s medical cause. This translation practice report is based on the Chinese translation of two research papers on atopic dermatitis taken from Allergy International and the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. Both papers belong to sci-tech texts, and according to Newmark’s classification of texts, they belong to informative texts.Newmark pointed out that for different types of texts, corresponding translation approaches should be chosen. For this translation practice,at the lexical level, there are a large number of medical professional terms and abbreviations in the source text.In the translation process, the translator is guided by semantic and communicative translation approaches, and mainly uses techniques such as literal translation, transference and so forth to ensure the professionalism and accuracy of the translation. At the syntactic level, there are many sentences with passive voice, long and complicated ones in the source text, and the translator focuses on communicative translation approach, using techniques such as liner translation, inverted translation, division, and amplification to convey the information of the source text accurately and ensure the readability of the translated text.At the discoursal level, the translator also focuses on communicative translation approach, and appropriate cohesive devices are employed to make the logical coherence of the translated text. This study finds out that Newmark’s translation theory can provide positive theoretical guidance for the Chinese translation of English medical literature. This translation practice report aims to provide some reference and help to Chinese translation of medical literature in English and encourage more translators to do in-depth research in English-Chinese medical translation. |
