A Report On E-C Translation Of Children’s Literature Stella(Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

This paper is a report on the English-Chinese translation.The material for this translation is selected from chapters 11 to 21 of Stella,a novel by American children’s writer Mc Call Hoyle.The novel tells the story of Stella,a dog suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder,who must muster the courage to overcome its fears in order to help save a young girl suffering from epilepsy.Written from the first perspective of Stella,the novel has an original narrative angel,vivid words and expressions.This story is imaginative and has a certain educational significance.Reception aesthetics emphasizes reader-centeredness,and literary creation should consider readers’ aesthetic consciousness,satisfy or break their expectations,fill in the meaning blank of the text appropriately to meet the reading needs of target readers.Under the guidance of reception aesthetics,this paper discusses and analyzes translation from three aspects: word,syntax and rhetoric.At the lexical level,the translator standardizes the personal pronouns,adopts replicate words and colloquial expressions to make the translation more in line with the language style of children;at the syntactic level,the translator divides the sentences and adjusts their order,and fills in the semantic meaning properly,so as to make the translation more concise and coherent in is syntax;at the rhetorical level,the translator retains simile,personification and hyperbole in the original text to increase the interest of the translation,make the translation more closer to the style of original text,and improve the acceptance of the translation by children’s readers.Guided by the theory of reception aesthetics,the translator has a further understanding of the translation of children’s literature,especially the translations of children’s literature with animals as the first point of view,and a more accurate understanding of the reading needs of children readers.These valuable experiences will promote the growth of the translator herself.At the same time,the translator hopes that this report will be helpful to other translators in translating similar texts in the future.
