Pre-task Preparation Of Medical Conference Under The Guidance Of Schema Theory

This paper is a SI practice report on the 2022 International Training Programme on Frontier Progress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.In December 2022,as one of the interpreter,the author participated in project "Online International Research Project on Advances in Obstetrics and Gynecology" which was declared by Ministry of Science and Technology,sponsored by Barts Health NHS Trust and joined by Jiangxi Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital.Nearly 100 staffs from all departments of Jiangxi Maternal and Child Health Hospital participated in the program.The programme was held in zoom and lasted 5 days.During the programme,several themed lectures with interactive questions and answers were held.As this programme is highly professional and authoritative,the report focuses on this programme is helpful for promoting the progress of interpreting under the guidance of schema theory,especially interpreting for medical conferences.At present,whether at home or abroad,most of the research focuses on the interpretation skills of interpreters,but neglects the crucial preparation before translation.Therefore,during the working period,the interpreter consciously conducted the pre-task preparation under the guidance of schema theory,which involves three perspectives namely language schema,content schema and formal schema and recorded the interpreting process of the author.After the task,the author made an analysis of the audio of the SI practice.Due to the limited space,the author selected the audio of day3 and day5 for specific case analysis.The author analyzed her positive performance and negative performance under the guidance of schema theory.On this basis,the guiding significance of schema theory to the medical conference and the corresponding suggestions were proposed.The findings of this report are as follows: 1.The pre-task preparation under the guidance of schema theory has a high guiding value for interpretation;2.Proper pre-task preparation are helpful for interpreter to predict the translation content and activate the existing knowledge framework in interpreter’s brain;3.The improper preparation of professional vocabulary caused by the interpreter’s lack of adequate understanding of medical knowledge and the interpreter’s incorrect prediction of the speaker’s accent and speed caused by the misleading of the conference organizer will affect the accurate and smooth output of the interpreter to a certain extent.
