The writer Ding Bogang always sticks to the individual, pays attention to many individuals in the society, especially in the countryside, and writes about their life experience such as suffering, struggle, sinking and relief. This paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which introduces Ding Bogang’s growing experience, periods of creation and research status. The second and third chapters discuss the content of Ding Bogang’s works, trying to dissect the ideas of his works.Suffering and self-abuse are two elements with both generality and emotion that are extracted. The second chapter mainly summarizes the specific causes of the suffering of the characters in the novel from the four dimensions of space, time, ethics and existence, including the dual rejection of hometown and foreign land, historical trauma, the pressure imposed by the parents, and some defects of character.Following the previous chapter, the third chapter analyzes how Ding Bogang incorporates self-abuse on the basis of suffering in his works, and envisage it as a unique way for characters to be saved. The writer’s characters are torn and pulled by the outside world, stuck forever between home and foreign land, history and the present, and at a loss in the confrontation between parents and children, the strong and the weak.In the process of digesting these sufferings, the characters experience significant signs and symptoms of mental disease, and the continuous suffering becomes the psychological cause of promoting individual self-abuse.They hate themselves, and under the help of death instinct, they fight against their inner fragility and insecurity in a way of self-torture,presenting a religious gesture toward death. The last chapter is about the artistic analysis, grasping the artistic characteristics of Ding Bogang’s works aesthetically.Ding Bogang continued to deepen his novella style, sketching out the folkloric daily life and conveying serious metaphysical thinking in his wandering style. At the same time, under the premise of aesthetic norms dominated by realism,he is good at using the strangeness of the story to highlight some deep and subtle mental activities and has a clear personal artistic style.
