| Mencius’ theory of "defying ambition with intention" is an important viewpoint in traditional Chinese literary theory and one of the important entry points for later generations to study Mencius’ thoughts.Through the inheritance, development, and evolution of later generations,Mencius’ theory of "defying ambition with intention"has become an inseparable point in the current study of ancient Chinese literary theory. However, the understanding and application of "defying one’s will with one’s will" have been controversial over the ages, and there has been no conclusive conclusion so far.Although there are many previous works on the study of "rebelling against ambition with intention",the main focus is on the study of Mencius’ poetic thoughts and the overall ideological system of Mencius, that is,the study of Confucian classics from many perspectives, while the study from the perspective of literary criticism theory is not many. Therefore, this article attempts to study Mencius’ theory of "rebelling against ambition with intention" from the perspective of literary criticism.A group of literary critics, including "Wang Guowei,Zhu Ziqing,Guo Shaoyu,Luo Genze,Gu Jiegang,Gu Yisheng,Li Zehou, and Tong Qingbing",as well as scholars representing "Yang Bojun" and contemporary "Cai Zhenchu,Chen Liangyun,Zhang Shaokang,Hou Minze,Li Yanzhu,Wen Shaoxiong,Zhai Tingjin,Zhou Guangqing,Zhou Yukai,Deng Xinhua,Chen Zhichun,Wang Yixian,Zou Ran,Wang Zhiming,Chen Tongsheng,Wu Ruixia, and Cai Zhenxiong" Some other representative scholars, such as Mencius, have taken their different understandings and applications of "rebelling against ambition with intention" as their research objects, trying to sort them out and analyze the reasons behind their different understandings of Mencius’ "rebelling against ambition with intention".Finally, through the above research,I try to explore and demonstrate how we should make a correct understanding of Mencius’ "betraying one’s will with one’s will" at present. Therefore, following the above ideas, this article will be divided into four chapters to elaborate. The first chapter mainly analyzes the historical background and theoretical basis of Mencius’ theory of "taking meaning out of context" and"expressing ambition through poetry" in the pre Qin period. The second and third chapters are the key content of this article. The second chapter analyzes the four main understandings of literary criticism theorists regarding "using meaning to defeat ambition" in contemporary Chinese literary criticism, with the main differences being in the interpretation of "meaning".Therefore, there are "meaning" as the meaning of the reader,"meaning" as the meaning of the text,"meaning" as the meaning of the author, and "the fusion of the meaning of the reader and the meaning of the author.".The third chapter is an analysis of the reasons for the conclusion of the second chapter.Using the method of cross research between ancient and modern China and the West, the author attempts to analyze the internal and external reasons(traditional Chinese theories)that contemporary scholars have different understandings of the literary criticism theory of "defying one’s will with one’s will",and concludes that for Mencius’ theory of "defying one’s will with one’s will",Regarding "meaning" as "reader’s meaning" is influenced by traditional authoritative interpretations such as ancient Zhao Qi and Zhu Xi,as well as the theory of "reader centered" advocated by Gadamer in the modern West, and is also the choice of most scholars;Regarding "meaning" as the meaning of a text is influenced by the views of scholars such as Jiao Xun and Yao Jiheng in the Qing Dynasty and the idea of "text centered theory" advocated by Paul Liko in the modern West, with a tendency towards pure literature; The perception of"meaning" as the author’s meaning is influenced by the views of ancient scholars such as Liu Xie and Wu Qi,as well as the theories of Western scholars such as Schleiermacher,Dilthey, and Hirsch advocating "author centered theory".Few people hold this theory because they find it difficult to achieve a complete resonance between the reader and the author; At the end of this chapter,I will briefly discuss the understanding of "meaning" as the theory of "the fusion of the reader’s meaning and the author’s meaning",as well as the theory of "speculation".The fourth chapter mainly expresses the author’s point of view: "Using the will to oppose the will" should mean that the reader completely restores the author’s intention and goes against the author’s"will",that is,"using the author’s intention to oppose the author’s" will ".It is also discussed from two aspects: the" theory of literary intention "and the principle of" truth, goodness, and beauty "in literature. The last part is the conclusion, which briefly summarizes the previous discussion. |
