| English reading plays a crucial role in improving elementary school students’ overall English ability.However,in the process of learning English,the single and limited amount of English reading materials has resulted in many elementary school students’ low motivation and lack of interest in English reading.Narrow reading helps learners acquire background knowledge about the topic,understand the structure of the text,and accumulate relevant vocabulary through reading multiple works on the same topic,genre,or by the same author,thus improving learners’ reading level and stimulating their interest in reading.The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of "narrow reading" on the English reading achievement and interest of upper elementary school students.The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of "narrow reading" on students’ reading achievement and interest in English:1.Does narrow reading improve elementary students’ English reading achievement?2.Does narrow reading improve elementary students’ English reading interest?The author took 84 students from two natural classes of fifth grade in an elementary school in Jiaozuo City as the experimental subjects and divided them into experimental and control classes respectively for an eight-week experiment.Before the experiment,questionnaires were administered to the students in the two classes to find out their interest in English reading.A pre-test was also administered to ensure that there was no significant difference in English reading level between the students in the two classes.During the experiment,the author conducted narrow reading English reading instruction in the experimental class,while the control class still used the traditional English reading instruction method.At the end of the experiment,post-tests,questionnaires and interviews were administered to students in both classes,and the following conclusions were drawn from the pre-and post-experimental data analysis using SPSS26:1.The recurrence of knowledge information related to the learning topic in the narrow reading materials helped students expand their topic vocabulary,phrases and sentence structures,and continuously strengthened their English language sense and discourse analysis skills during the reading process,thus improving elementary students’ English reading performance.2.Narrow reading provides students with rich and interesting English reading materials,helps students expand their background knowledge related to the topic,reduces the difficulty of reading English materials to a certain extent,reduces students’ English reading anxiety,and thus stimulates students’ English reading motivation.Based on the above findings,the author makes some suggestions,hoping to provide some reference value for the future application of narrow reading to English reading teaching in upper elementary schools. |
