| The source text for this translation practice report comes from a real translation project-Radiology in Forensic Medicine.From February to August 2022,the author had the opportunity to participate in the English-to-Chinese translation of Radiology in Forensic Medicine,which contains 29 chapters mainly discussing the application of radiological imaging techniques in forensic autopsy.To complete this translation report,the translator selected the chapter 11(Violence and Abuse:Battered Child)and the chapter 16(Body Packing)as the source texts.As medical text,it characterized by a high degree of specialization,often containing a large amount of medical terminology.Accuracy is crucial in medical translation,as any erroneous information can lead to serious consequences.Additionally,the text contains a substantial amount of information and multiple subject areas,requiring the translator to have strong reading and information processing abilities.In the course of translation practice,the first challenge lies in the semantic comprehension of medical terminology.Given the numerous specialized terminology and quasi-medical terms included in the text,the translator needs to spend a lot of time and effort verifying terminology by using Google and parallel texts.The second challenge pertains to accurately conveying the information present in the source text in the target language.Due to differences in syntax structures and expression habits between Chinese and English,she needs to break down and reorganize complex sentences in the source text,and convert passive sentences into active ones.The final challenge involves that the translator needs to make appropriate adjustments where the target language expression is not precise enough or does not conform to the target language expression habits.To achieve this,the translator mainly employs techniques such as amplification and simplification to explicit the missing or implicit semantics.Through this translation practice,the translator gained a thorough understanding of the speciality and the challenges of medical translation.The practice also highlighted the importance of comprehending the context and meaning of the source language,and accurately conveying it in the target language,which is the foundation of adaptability.Then,the verification of a large number of terms is extremely time-consuming and energetic,so translators should use CAT to accumulate translation memory databases in various professional fields.Finally,the translator hopes to provide some inspirations for translators who want to work in medical translation by showing the way of thinking,the problems encountered and the solutions in the process of this translation. |
