Strategies For The Translation Of English Referring Expressions Under The Guidance Of Accessibility Theory

This translation practice report is based on the Chinese translation practice of the book An Eye-Tracking Study of Equivalent Effect in Translation.The book mainly uses eye-tracking.In 2006,eye-tracking was first introduced to the translation process research(TPR)in western translation studies,and domestic translation scholars also started to pay attention to the eye-tracking,but existing study results are mostly the introduction of literature.Considering this,the Chinese translation of this book can help domestic scholars understand the latest trends of the actual use of the eye-tracking in translation studies.This book is an academic research publication,which is an informative text with strict,concise and accurate language,rigorous logic and vocabulary selection.In the process of translation,it is noticed that in order to make the content strict and logical,anaphora is used in many places in the original text in which contains many referring expressions.Some of the referring expressions are close to the antecedents,and some are far away.Thus,how should the referring expressions in English be translated?This question becomes the concern of this practice.This translation practice report applies Mira Ariel’s Accessibility Theory to study the translation strategies of referring expressions in English.Guided by the theory’s meticulous classification of referring expressions’ accessibility,the author identifies the referring expressions in the original text,and translates these referring expressions based on the distance factor,the most important of the four factors affecting the choice of referring expressions forms.Finally,in this translation practice report,three translation strategies for referring expressions are summarized: strategy of literal translation,non-translation and conversion.This translation practice report is divided into five chapters: Chapter 1 briefly introduces the background,research content and significance of this translation practice report;Chapter 2 gives a detailed description of the translation process;Chapter 3 introduces the Accessibility Theory used in this report and discusses its applicability and significance in guiding this report;Chapter 4 shows relevant cases of Chinese translations of referring expressions under the guidance of Accessibility Theory;Chapter 5 is the practice’s summary chapter,which summarizes the process of writing the report and related experiences and shortcomings.
