A Study On The Urban Form And Commercial Development Of Modern Kunming(1905-1945)

As an important city in southwest China and a city that has played an important role in modern history,Kunming’s business and trade development and urban form change are all important issues concerning the development of Chinese cities.Since the late Qing Dynasty,the south gate of Kunming City has been crowded with population and frequent commercial activities,and the city has played its political function to the greatest extent.With the opening of port for commerce,the opening of Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and the demolition of city walls,the commercial and spatial forms of the city have undergone great changes and development,and commerce has become the most active factor in the city.As one of the central cities in Southwest China,Kunming has undergone great changes in modern times.The city wall’s restriction on urban space has been gradually broken,and the traffic situation has also been greatly developed,which makes the commercial development of Kunming enter a higher level and historical level,gradually becoming the foreign trade center of the province,as well as an important trade hub and commodity distribution center in Southwest China.The scale and form of Kunming city also changed accordingly.On the other hand,the change of Kunming’s urban form makes the urban economic development appear new characteristics of The Times,which also shows the common characteristics of Chinese urban modernization.From the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China,the commercial development of Kunming entered a new historical height with the opening of its own commercial port and the rise of Yunnan-Vietnam Railway.The city scope of Kunming was also constantly expanding outward.Meanwhile,restricted by the geographical environment of "three mountains and one river",the newly expanded urban area was mainly in the southeastern part of the city.In the process of urban regional expansion,"city" and "city" depend on each other,promote each other and develop together.This paper reviews the process of Kunming city formation and development,including the geographical basis of Kunming city formation and the status of social and economic development,the changes of central cities in the historical development of Yunnan region,the evolution of modern Kunming city,and the inner relations between Kunming city development and its self-opening commercial port and the opening of Yunnan-Vietnam railway.At the same time,it describes the status of modern Kunming’s commercial development,and holds that the city’s internal trade activities are active,which has become the most important factor affecting the change of urban form.The commercial area is developed in the south of the city,and the commercial center is mainly in the area of Zhengyi Road,Jinbi Road and Dongsi Street.The change of Kunming’s urban form and the expansion of Kunming’s urban space are also described in detail.Since the opening of the commercial port,Kunming has witnessed great commercial development and has rapidly become the largest commercial center city in Yunnan Province.This paper not only explores the effect of the changes of commercial development on the change of urban form,but also discusses the influence of the modernization of Kunming’s urban form on the commercial development of Kunming and discusses the characteristics of the formation of Kunming’s urban form and commercial district.It is believed that modern commercial development and urban space expansion have the same direction,commercial layout and urban space have the mixed characteristics.In the end,the paper summarizes and looks forward to the relationship between the change of Kunming’s urban form and commercial development,Kunming’s urban status and past experience,as well as the enlightenment to the future of Kunming’s urban planning.
