The rapid development and extensive application of modern information technology in education enable the transformation in educational mode and approach.In virtue of satellite telecommunications technology and with the characteristics of cooperative teaching community and quaternity,the full-time distance live teaching mode breaks the constraint of time and space,effectively realize the sharing of high-quality educational resources,and contributes distinctly in promoting educational fairness,especially for the remote ethnic areas that appeal to educational assistance thanks to the limited educational resources and the students’ weak learning-foundation.From the perspective of schools of the receiving end,low level of engagement and lacking of interaction have always been critical issues in English class under the distance live teaching mode.Over the past nine years,the distance live teaching mode has witnessed the promotion and progress of Shuangliu Y School.As one of first-year graduates in 2016,the author regards the school as a specific case to analyze the application and the current issues of students’ attitude and engagement.With the engagement theory and Constructive learning theory as the theoretical foundation,the students and English teachers of online class as the research participants,by means of questionnaire,interview and classroom observation,the students’ engagement in English class is investigated.Taking the three levels of engagement as the breakthrough point,the questionnaire researches students’ attitude and the status quo of engagement in English class.Interview and class observation are employed to reveal the English teaching challenges and real status of students’ class engagement.The study mainly focus on the following three research questions:(1)What is the status quo of students’ attitude and class engagement in English class under the distance live teaching mode?(2)What is the relation of the internal structure among attitude towards such mode and the three dimensions in engagement?(3)What is the challenge and countermeasure of the current English teaching in this school?Combing quantitative and qualitative investigation,the conclusions are as follows:(1)Students hold positive attitude and have high level of engagement in English class with cognitive engagement ranking the first place and the surface strategy being utilized mostly;the level of concentration is high in behavioral engagement and sense of accomplishment is the highest among the four variables of emotional engagement.(2)The levels of male students’ sense of boredom,intensive study and deep strategy are higher than that of female students;students of science hold more positive attitude and they are more active in cognitive and emotional engagement;dependency strategy influence students’ learning engagement most.(3)The teaching plateau and class interaction are the current challenge for teachers in this school.Based on the aforementioned findings,this thesis contributes to some suggestions and implications:(1)Adjusting class arrangement according to students’ learning situation.(2)Incentivizing students’ learning autonomy and cultivate their awareness of learning strategy to adopt to such learning mode quickly and learn to imitate students’ ways of thinking,presentation and learning autonomy from the front end.(3)Making comparison of students’ learning initiative,subjectivity and engagement of the two types of classes to explore the effective approach of refined video.
