In the process of modernisation, change is something that no region can avoid. Therefore, writing about the changes caused by the modernisation process has become one of the important themes in the writing of contemporary writers.A Lai is an ethnic minority writer who writes in Chinese, and his literary work began with poetry and became famous for his novels. However, through his prose, one can observe his wide and diverse life experiences and his sincere and free sense of subjectivity, especially his Tibetan travelogue prose.Alai’s Tibetan travelogue essays are a true record of the influx of modern changes into Tibet, rich in connotation and critical awareness, and full of hidden worries about Tibetan society in the process of modernisation.Alai grew up between the folds of the mountains in the Jajang region, and the unique geographical environment and the cultivation of various cultures were the background for his Tibetan travelogue essays.Through his descriptions of the natural and social changes in the Tibetan region during the process of modernisation,Alai’s Tibetan travelogue essays show the Tibetan people’s adherence to the traditional culture of the Gyatso and their pursuit of modernisation and change.Firstly,Alai’s Tibetan travelogue prose recalls the memory of the community’s culture through the unique imagery of the Gyatso region. The thesis uses statistical methods to sort out the number and types of imagery in Alai’s Tibetan travelogue prose. It is found that the imagery in Alai’s Tibetan travelogue prose is mainly natural and humanistic imagery.Through the natural imagery of plants, animals, sounds, sacred mountains and sacred lakes,Alai’s Tibetan travelogue essays search for the indigenous beliefs of the Tibetan people;through the humanistic imagery of visiting the potlatch dances, bunkers and temples in the Jajang Tibetan region,he presents the traditional ethnic cultural symbols of Tibet.Secondly,as modernization continues to penetrate into Tibetan lands,A Lai’s Tibetan travelogue essays explore the pains brought about by modernization in three ways: from the destruction of the natural environment to the disappearance of divine nature;from the changes in Tibetan values and behaviour to the alienation of human nature;from the decline of religion, language and architecture to the social disorder of the Jajong region. Finally,Alai’s attitude towards modern change is not static and undergoes a process from anxiety to ease.
