The source text of this translation practice is selected from the book Narrative Form recommended by the supervisor of the translator.Narrative Form is a literary theory work in the field of narratology, written by Suzanne Keen,an American narratologist.Based on the English-Chinese translation practice of Narrative Form(Excerpt),this report analyzes the translation methods of academic texts from the perspective of semantic translation and communicative translation.Narrative Form is a literary theory work in the field of narratology. The author’s clear and legible language style enables readers to fully and clearly understand the purpose, characteristics and functions of narrative form, and grasp the related concepts and methods more accurately. The first three chapters focus on the definition, framework and situation of narrative novels.Narrative Form involves a large number of literary terms and other proper nouns. In addition,as an academic work(which can also be used as a textbook),the language of Narrative Form is more vivid than other books and has its own characteristics, which can stimulate the readers’ interest in academic works. On the basis of analyzing the writing intention and language style of the source text, the translator attempts to apply Peter Newmark’s translation theory―communicative translation and semantic translation to the translation of Narrative Form. The starting point of semantic translation is the source text, which is close to the author’s original intention, while the purpose of communicative translation is to let as many readers experience the translation as possible, and the feedback obtained can indicate the completion of the translation.Basing on the above theory, the translator adopts the corresponding translation methods in the process of translation.Combining with specific examples, the translator analyzes the report from the three levels of vocabulary, sentence and discourse, and summarizes the findings and reflections.Under the guidance of communicative translation, the translator pays attention to the reading experience of target language readers and adopt translation methods such as voice conversion, part of speech conversion, additional translation, appropriate rewriting and sentence splitting to make the target text natural and improve its readability.Under the guidance of semantic translation,in order to help the target readers understand the target text, the translator adds annotations to explain academic and cultureloaded words in the original text.To express the meaning of the source text accurately, the translator retains the key English words in the source text.In addition, the translator retains the original sentence pattern appropriately to reproduce the author’s thinking process and writing purpose.Through this practice, the translator has a further grasp of the application of the theory, and it is also hoped to provide some reference for the translation of academic texts.
