A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of China’s Climate Challenge: Financing The Transition To Net Zero Guided By Skopos Theory

For the further development of the economy,China needs to tell our economic story to the world,and translation and transmission of advanced economic development ideas and methods from abroad to our country are also needed.In this context,the translator has put into practice the World Economic Forum’s July 2022 report China’s Climate Challenge: Financing the Transition to Net Zero.The report elaborates on China’s future carbon emissions targets and the efforts needed to achieve them.To meet carbon emission targets,the source text focuses on the tasks needed to be fulfilled in the four aspects including steel,transportation,buildings,and real estate.The World Economic Forum’s authority in the global financial field ensures the quality and accuracy of the material.The full text contains about 15,000 words and no Chinese translation is currently available.During the translation process,based on the translator’s translation practice,after checking relevant parallel texts,as well as similar translat ion practice reports and using computer-aided translation,the translator found and summarized the translation problems existing in this type of text,including incorrect translation of abbreviated words,long and difficult sentences,sentences that are no t coherent and smooth enough,and expressions that do not conform to Chinese habits,etc.To address the above issues,the translator analyzes 21 examples from the source text,uses six translation methods,including literal translation with annotation,conversion,reconstruction,omission,word-for-word translation,and paraphrasing,retranslates the machine-translated version,and compares the two translated versions.Guided by the Skopos rule,coherence rule,and fidelity rule of the Skopos theory,the report examines whether the revised translations satisfy the above rules.As a result,the translator found that the translations were more fluent,and the readability was enhanced under the guidance of the Skopos theory.The report applies Skopos theory to guide the translation of economic texts,which not only provides a reference for the translation of such texts but also broadens the scope of application of Skopos theory and provides certain references for other translators.
