The Song Dynasty was the peak of the development of landscape painting.Due to the "shame of Jingkang",there were significant changes in China, which were divided into two periods: the Northern Song Dynasty and the Southern Song Dynasty.Among them, the Northern Song Dynasty witnessed economic prosperity and vast territory, while the Southern Song Dynasty witnessed economic decline and retreated to a marginal position. At the same time, the literati community was inevitably affected, forming disparate painting ideas and displaying unique landscapes. When discussing the development of ancient landscape painting in "The Afterword of the Artistic Garden",Wang Shizhen once said,"The landscape changed once to the size of Li,Jing,Guan,Dong,Ju,Li Cheng,Fan Kuan,Liu,Li,Ma,Xia..." These changes are not only reflected in the concept of painting, but also in the composition of landscape painting.During the Northern Song Dynasty, landscape painting concepts were open and inclusive, and painters mainly used "panoramic" composition to depict natural scenery,During the Southern Song Dynasty, painters bent their hearts and restrained their aspirations, and their landscape paintings were often presented in a "cut scene" composition. In traditional Chinese painting theory, composition is referred to as "composition" or "layout".Gu Kaizhi referred to it as "setting up Chen Bushi" and in the Southern Dynasty,Xie He wrote the "business position" in the "Ancient Paintings Record".In the Tang Dynasty,Zhang Yanyuan further demonstrated the "business position" as "the overall importance of painting" in the "Records of Famous Paintings of the Past Dynasties-Six Methods of Painting".It can be seen that composition is the key point and pivot of the entire painting style. In order to absorb and draw lessons from the expressive methods of the two Song Dynasty landscape painting, and apply them to personal creation, this article attempts to compare the composition of the two Song Dynasty landscape painting from three aspects: momentum, perspective, and layout,in order to further understand the different painting styles presented by ink and wash landscape painting during this period. In repeated practice, learn from ancient methods, borrow ancient innovations, and explore a suitable path for their own creation in contemporary landscape painting.
